Blogger’s Quilt Festival–Spring 2013

Posted by on May 17, 2013 in Featured, home sweet home, quilt, quilt gallery | 4 comments

Happy May 17th everyone!  Today is the start of one of my favorite two times of the year – the Spring Edition of the Blogger’s Quilt Festival over at AmysCreativeSide!
AmysCreativeSide.com
If you’ve never been at my blog before – Welcome!  and for those who have – Welcome Back!
The first Quilt I would like to enter into the Blogger’s Quilt Festival is my ‘Home Sweet Home’ Quilt Along Quilt in the ‘Group or Bee Quilts’ Category.

Home Sweet Home Quilt - Finished

This quilt was created with 20 different blocks (17 designers) and 49 different sashings created as a result of the 2012 Home Sweet Home Quilt Along I ran on my blog.  Every time you look at this quilt you notice something new which is always one of my goals when I create.  This quilt was free motion quilted by Marcia’s Crafty Sewing & Quilting.

I wanted to show a few close ups…

In this block, I fussy cut the fabrics so there are animals in the windows.  7962612376_ab275a661e

When I could make it work, I tried to match the fabrics in the sashing with the fabrics in the blocks.  By doing this it made it harder to differentiate between where a block started and where it ended.  I loved the transition.7962774772_cb744a2acf

The way the sashing blends into the block above you wouldn’t even know that the tree isn’t part of the house block!

I also personally love the back.  It’s pieced from fabrics I used in the front along with the ‘practice’ blocks I made when I was coming up with my block designs.  I also printed out a list of the blocks and who designed them onto some fabric to include in the backing of the quilt.

I would love to hear what you think of this quilt!

The festival starts today, and runs through May 31st. It’s open to anyone who wants to enter, and there will be lots of great prizes.  Be sure to check it out NOW!  Get your post written and show off your quilt!

Once you’ve had a chance to visit as many of the quilts, as possible you may nominate your very favorite, for a Viewer’s Choice Award! To nominate complete the form at the bottom of the THIS POST with the link to the post and your email address.  Nominations without a valid email will be eliminated, and multiple nominations with the same email will be eliminated.  One entry per email address please.

If ‘Home Sweet Home’ is your favorite quilt head over to THIS POST and copy the text below:

Home Sweet Home Sashing Tutorial 8 Rectangles (17)

Posted by on Dec 6, 2012 in home sweet home, how to, sashing | 0 comments

I have decided to just ‘rip the band aid off’ so to speak and finish up the last three of the Home Sweet Home Quilt Along Sashing Tutorials.  Next up – another easy one:

17. 8 Rectangles

One of the bad things about procrastinating so long on some of these tutorials is that I’m having a hard time finding the pictures I took during the progress or I’m realizing that I didn’t take pictures.  Since this tutorial is really, really simple I’m just going to go without good step by step pictures.  Home Sweet Home Quilt - Finished

The sashing ‘8 rectangles’ can been seen on the right side of the Bonus Block, Marcia’s Crazee Patch House and

Home Sweet Home Quilt - Finished

the left side of Block 11, Happy Tree.

Fabric Requirements

From 8 different fabric scraps cut one – 2” x 3.5” rectangle

Piecing Instructions

Pair the rectangles into four sets.  Sew them together along the 3.5” side of the rectangle.  Iron to one side.  Now sew your four squares together to make your ‘8 Rectangles’ sashing.

Just two tutorials left…

Home Sweet Home – Nine Patch Centered In Red Sashing (32) Tutorial

Posted by on Dec 5, 2012 in Featured, home sweet home, how to, sashing, tutorial | 0 comments

I can’t believe that the end is in sight for the 49 different Home Sweet Home QuiltSashings!  I knew it was going to be an undertaking just making 49 different sashings but I have to say – posting the tutorials has been way more work than I thought it would be.  I apologize that it’s taken me so long to finish the job.   Alright – here goes the next one:

Sashing 32.  Nine Patch Centered in Red

We’re going to make 2 sets 2 of nine patches for this sashing.  It’s important that your Fabric 1 and Fabric 2’s are opposite of each other in value for each set of nine patches.  A red fabric should be used for the centers.

First Set of 2 Nine Patch Fabric Requirements

205-001Red – 1 1.5” x 3.5” strip Fabric 1 (lighter Green) – 2 – 1.5” x 3.5” strips AND 1 – 1.5” x 6.5” strip Fabric 2 (Dark Green) – 2 – 1.5” x 6.5” strips

Second Set of 2 Nine Patch Fabric Requirements

202Red – 1 – 1.5” x 3.5” strip Fabric 1 (Darker Fabric) – 2 – 1.5” x 3.5” strips AND 1 – 1.5” x 6.5” strip Fabric 2 (Lighter Fabric) – 2 – 1.5” x 6.5” strips

Instructions

Follow these instructions when you make all four of your nine patches. 201Sew the two  3.5” strips of Fabric 1 to both sides of the Red Fabric. Iron towards Fabric 1. Sew the two 6.5” strips of Fabric 2 to both sides of the 6.5” strip of Fabric 1.  Iron towards Fabric 2. 202Now – cut two 1.5” x 3.5″ strips from the first triple strip you made. Next – cut four 1.5” x 3.5” strips from the second triple strip you made.   Next – with the red in the center sew the second two strips together to make a nine patch as shown in the picture above.  Make 2 in this color way.203 Repeat the steps above so you have 2 nine patches in each set of fabric. Layout out your four nine patches so they alternate with lights and dark fabrics in the corners.  Now sew them all together to make a strip! 205And there you have it – Sashing 32 – Nine Patch Centered in Red Sashing! P9060024 You can see the Nine Patch Centered in Red Sashing to the left of Block 1, My Home.

Home Sweet Home – Tetris Sashing Tutorial (29)

Posted by on Nov 30, 2012 in Featured, home sweet home, how to, sashing, tutorial | 0 comments

I’m chipping away at the final few sashing tutorials for the Home Sweet Home Quilt Along.  Here’s another for you already!

29.  Tetris Sashing

Fabric Requirements

Fabric 1:  2 – 3.5” x 2” rectangles

Fabric 2: 2 – 3.5” x 2” rectangles

Fabric 2: 2 – 3.5” x 2” rectangles

Fabric 2: 2 – 3.5” x 2” rectangles

Instructions

00 027 Layout the four fabrics similar to the design above.  I named this the ‘Tetris’ Sashing because it reminds me of the ‘L’ blocks in tetris.  00 028 Sew each of the rectangular pairs together.  Iron towards the darker fabric.  00 030

Piece the squares together so they keep the ‘L’ tetris shape and pattern.

00 029 Here’s the Tetris Sashing shown between Block 10  and a Bonus Block.
