My Favorite Block Quilt Along–Block 18 from Army Quilting

Posted by on Apr 18, 2013 in Featured, My Favorite Block Quilt Along, Quilt Along | 0 comments

I can’t believe how close we are to wrapping up the ‘My Favorite Block Quilt Along’.  I hope you have all enjoyed this as much as I have!  I know I’ve learned a lot, met new people, and in the end, I’ll have a beautiful quilt.  Okay – enough mushy quilty words. Let’s meet Sara Amerine of Army Quilting – the designer of our 17th block and find out a few random things about her:

What is your favorite thing about Quilt Alongs?

I love QALs because not only do you get to learn a lot of things, but you also get to meet other quilters. You’re also able to see lots of different ideas for the same pattern.

When you look at your quilts – what color do you seem to use the most of?

Blue. I LOVE blue.

When you look at your fabric stash – what color do you seem to have the most of?

Red. Most of the quilts I make I donate to wounded servicemen and women, so my stash is basically all reds, whites, and blues.

What other quilt alongs are you participating in in 2013?

There have been so many great QALs that I’ve wanted to take part in this year. However, due to our crazy schedule right now I have been unable to do so. I do hope, once things slow down, to catch up on the Rancher’s Daughter QAL over at The Scrappy Apple Yard.

My Favorite Block Quilt Along–Block 17 from Sew BitterSweet Designs

Posted by on Apr 16, 2013 in Featured, My Favorite Block Quilt Along, Quilt Along | 0 comments

It’s Tuesday – which means….it’s time for the 17th block of the My Favorite Block Quilt Along.  Today our block comes from the fabulous Melissa Dunworth of Sew BitterSweet Designs!  Let’s find out a bit more about Melissa before we discover her favorite block!

What is your favorite thing about Quilt Alongs?

Seeing how other people do things and learning methods that may be better than the ones I’m using.

When you look at your quilts – what color do you seem to use the most of?

Blue is the most prominent color

DSC_0532 WatermarkWhen you look at your fabric stash – what color do you seem to have the most of?

Definitely blues and purples. I have way more red and pink that I ever thought I would too. This picture is of my yardage and my scraps (the scraps are sorted by color in the bins). All of my pre-cuts and fat quarters are stored…elsewhere. Needless to say if my stash grows anymore I think my hubby might have a heart attack!

What other quilt alongs are you participating in in 2013?

I’m planning one of my own later this year, but other than that, no current plans.

Apples or oranges?

Apples, oranges are now taboo in our house because of our daughter’s kidney condition.

Favorite Number:  12

Melissa gives us instructions on how to make these blocks in 5 different sizes!  Feel free to do whatever you want – these are great blocks for this Quilt Along.  I plan on using mine to help me ‘blend’ in some of the fabrics I haven’t used very much of and use up some of those scrappy strings I have left from cutting other blocks.

Dancing Stars QAL Progress Report

Posted by on Jan 25, 2013 in Featured, Quilt Along, quilt gallery | 0 comments

AmysCreativeSide.comI’ve already admitted it to you all – I’m a QAL/BOM addict.  I love them.  I feel accomplished even when I don’t have a lot of time to actually accomplish much.  Another one I’m doing this year…which is sort of insane, even for me…but a fun insane is the Dancing Stars Quilt-Along with Amy Ellis.  The reason it’s insane for me is that it’s sort of small piece paper piecing.  A lot of people get scared when they hear the words paper piecing.  But paper piecing is not difficult – in fact, you get more accurate results typically when you paper piece.  I would say the only downside is that you tend to waste a bit of fabric…but other than that you can really do some cool blocks once you have it figured out.

Dancing Stars These are small blocks so they’re a great way to use up your scraps.  My scrappy stars are just six 2.5” squares in each color way.  Dancing StarsMy scrappy beige background just needs squares that are 4”x4”, 2.5” x 4” and 2.5” x 2.5”. Dancing Stars All the stars I have done so far are 6 of the same color in each color way but I do plan on some of the stars being even scrappier – using fabrics that are similar but maybe not quite the same.  Dancing StarsMy plan is to do scrappy beige backgrounds with contrasting colored stars.  Different than what the tutorial shows – but hey, when have ever tried to be normal? Dancing Starts Quilt Along

I know it doesn’t look like much but I have six stars done so far!  I’m not sure what my end goal is but I’ll figure it out.

See how everyone’s progressing by visiting the flickr group.  You should join in the fun!  Amy gives you options as small as a table runner all the way up to a queen size quilt if you’re feeling ambitious!

Tripping Along

Posted by on Jan 24, 2013 in Featured, Quilt Along | 0 comments

If you haven’t figured it out yet…

“I am a quilt along addict.”  Yes, I’m finally admitting it – writing the sentence to you all.  I LOVE quilt alongs.  I’ll admit – I”m not the hugest fan of sampler quilts but I DO love making a sampler quilt ‘look cool’ or ‘modern’.  And I DO love learning so many different techniques without having to commit to a huge quilt to do so.  (ie…in last years Craftsy BOM we learned how to do Drunkard Path blocks…I will NEVER do that again…but I did fall in love with Hexagons which I never would have imagined…).

Anyway, I’ve fallen in with the trend (which is also something I try to avoid)…I’m Tripping Along with the #scrappytripalong.

IMG_3876 I had been seeing the blocks on instagram…I’d been seeing them on twitter.  I thought…hey, I’ll just make one…see what all the hype is about.IMG_3903which then turned into two…

scrappy trip along into 12…

IMG_4465and today…I’m at 16 #scrappytripalong blocks.  I’m not sure how many my ‘end goal’ is but I am really loving this!  I had a sew day with some ladies in my town last weekend and I shared my #scrappytripalong knowledge with them.  I’m pretty sure I have at least 2 new recruits…if not 4 our 5.

Did you trip along with everyone?  Please share you links below!  I want to see them!

Do you want to trip along with the quilting world too?

My Favorite Block Quilt Along – Progress Report

Posted by on Jan 22, 2013 in Featured, handmade, My Favorite Block Quilt Along, Quilt Along, Uncategorized | 2 comments

My Favorite Block Quilt Along started up last week.  I’m very excited to see how many people are participating in the fun!

I am going to start by showing the progress I made on my blocks and then I’ll share with you some groups I made from those who shared their blocks in the flickr group.

My fabric selection for the 'My Favorite Block Quilt Along'

I did decide to add some more darker oranges to my initial fabric ‘pull’ just because I felt I need them.

The first block tutorial was written by Diane Lapacek.  She chose the ‘Free Form Log Cabin’ Block.

IMG_4435

I decided to make one 12.5” unfinished block and two 6.5” unfinished blocks.  As we progress in the Quilt Along and get more blocks I’ll show you different things you can do with your smaller blocks to fit them into your quilt and create even more interest.

The next block shown was from Amy’s Creative Side and she chose ‘Road to Oklahoma’ for her block.

12.5 inch Road to OklahomaHere is my 12.5” block.   It went together quickly and I love it!

four 6.5" 'road to oklahoma' blocks

On Amy’s tutorial post she showed a few different layouts that you could do with the ‘Road to Oklahoma’ Block.  I fell in love with the first layout she showed.  I wanted to make my 4 ‘mini’ 6.5” blocks into that.

4 blocks, Option 1 Here’s what the four laid out in the pattern I loved looks like.  Turns out…the way I positioned my fabrics (which I really like) just don’t really do that much for me in this layout.  4 6.5-inch blocks, Layout 2So I started playing. Here’s another option…I like it – it’s a star with sort of a frame around it… 4 6.5-inch blocks, Layout 3

A third layout I tried. I like the crazy center. This one I have the the green and grey backgrounds kiddie corner of each other.  I did like it but I wanted to just play with one other option before I made my decision.  4 6.5-inch blocks, Layout 4

Here are the blocks laid out with the green backgrounds adjacent to one another and the grey backgrounds adjacent to each other.

Road to OklahomaI decided that I liked the fourth layout the best and I sewed my four 6.5” blocks together to make one more 12.5” blocks!

Now let’s peak at a summary of what’s happening with other peoples’ blocks in the Flickr Group!
